With the threat of injury and rotation to key Manchester City and Liverpool assets looming, we rank the best FPL Gameweek 35+ Captain options.
As we roll into the final four Gameweeks of the season, FPL managers are now at a critical crossroads with their captaincy decisions. An aggressive captaincy approach, such as selecting a differential captain, can result in explosive rank gains. This strategy can be tempting late in the season, but more often than not it will result in big red arrows. It is important to remember that your rank is the product of all the small decisions you make over the course of the season. It is not simply the outcome of a few “big” decisions.
Looking back at the previous Gameweek, there were no big surprises. Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United continued to showcase that they own the most potent attacking FPL assets. Meanwhile, Burnley and Wolverhampton extended their fine defensive form, despite a last minute blunder from the latter.
Heading into Gameweek 35+, there are some serious concerns surrounding the rotation of key players. Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both due for a rest and could start on the bench against Burnley. Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne picked up a knock late in the game against Newcastle, raising some distress in the FPL community about his status for the weekend. Meanwhile, Jamie Vardy was not spotted in team training on Monday, worrying some of his owners.
So with all question marks, who exactly are the best FPL Gameweek 35+ captain options?
As always, be sure to check out our FPL Captaincy Guide for more tips on selecting your FPL captain.
Bruno Fernandes – SOU (H)
There should not be a single active FPL team that does not own Bruno Fernandes.
Since the break, Bruno has been in extraordinary form, scoring 5 goals and adding 3 assists in 5 games. His 56 points over the stretch equate to a jaw-dropping 11.2 points per game. In the last three games alone, Fernandes has recorded 15, 15 and 14 points respectively.
And while the Portuguese star certainly won’t be putting up 15 pointers every night, he certainly has the track record for consistent returns. Since joining the league, Fernandes only failed to produce an attacking return in 2 of his 10 games played.
The stage is set for another big haul and this makes Bruno Fernandes the standout FPL Gameweek 35+ captain.
Raheem Sterling – BHA (A)
It has been a bit of a renaissance for Raheem Sterling since the Premier League returned to action.
The Manchester City winger has scored 3 goals, 3 assists and added 5 bonus points in the last 5 games. This good run of form has yielded owners a solid 39 FPL points – equating to about 7.8 points per game. However, what is more striking is his ability to produce these numbers under reduced minutes. In the the 5 games played, Sterling started only 4 and played over 60 minutes just 3 times.
And now with his rotation out of the way, FPL managers can be confident that Sterling’s spot will be secure in the Starting XI on Saturday. A clash against a Brighton defense that has allowed 6 goals in the last 3 games should provide plenty of opportunity for another big haul. This makes Raheem Sterling an intriguing FPL Gameweek 35+ captain option.
Sadio Mane – BUR (H)
While all the attention is on his Egyptian counterpart, Sadio Mane is the Liverpool player to captain this week.
Having watched Salah score a brace last game from the bench, you can be sure that Mane will be coming into Gameweek 45+ hungry and energized. And it is easy to forget that the Senegalese winger is one of the elite FPL players this season.
Despite some average performances since the break, Sadio Mane still sits third in FPL scoring with 200 points. The winger has an impressive 16 goals and 9 assists on the season, as well as 8 double digit hauls. And while certainly not blowing anyone out of the water, Mane still has 2 goals in his last 4 games.
A visit from Burnley also raises the prospect for more goals. In his last 3 matches against the Clarets, Mane has scored 4 times. That includes a wonderful goal scored in the GW4 reverse fixture earlier this year.
With Salah possibly riding the bench this week, Mane can be an excellent FPL Gameweek 35+ captain option.
Our Pick: Bruno Fernandes
It is a pretty simple decision to hand Bruno Fernandes the captaincy this Gameweek. With 44 FPL points in the last 3 Gameweeks, no player has been more consistent or explosive than the Manchester United star. Additionally, given the question marks that surround the availability of the top Liverpool and Manchester City assets, leaning towards Fernandes feels like the right move.
